Common Skin Problems and Their Treatments

Common Skin Problems and Their Treatments

“Healthy skin is a reflection of overall wellness.”

This is what Dr. Murad, an associate clinical professor of medicine at UCLA and the founder of Murad Skincare, Inc. has emphasized.

Indeed, having skin problems might mean that we are not emotionally or physically well. Besides, having a healthy and glowing skin could increase our confidence and boost our energy. Hence, we should make it a point to take care of our skin well.

Here are some common skin conditions which we should look out for and our possible treatment options:

  • Acne

When our hair follicles are plugged with oil and dead skin cells, acne starts to occur. They may be in the form of painful cysts or pimples, or they might even be milder like whiteheads and blackheads.

This condition is treated either through OTC drugs or prescription drugs, depending on its gravity. For example, Benzoyl Peroxide can be bought easily while another type of such drug – Benoxyl, PanOxyl, Persagel – can be bought in an independent pharmacy through a prescription. Retinoids, another prescription medicine, may also be used to treat blackheads and whiteheads. Moreover, antibiotics may also be topically or orally applied to control surface of bacteria and reduce inflammation, respectively.

  • Eczema

This terminology is used to refer to a group of skin conditions wherein the skin becomes irritated or inflamed. Affected areas of the skin are often red and itchy, and there might also be yellow or white scaly patches that flake off. It is often triggered by different factors – foods or environment.

Some medications could readily be bought in a pharmacy in Huntersville, North Carolina. However, other treatments are only available in a specialty pharmacy. The medicines may include topical ointments and creams, antibiotics, antihistamines, and systemic corticosteroids.

  • Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic disease caused by cells building up rapidly on the surface of an individual’s skin. The scaly, silvery, and sharply patches are commonly on the scalp, elbows, and knees. These patches are often caused by itchiness and pain.

Although there is no cure for psoriasis, we can manage its symptoms by medicines bought at different types of drugstores like a retail pharmacy in North Carolina. Treatments may be topically administered like Anthralin, Vitamin D analogues, topical retinoids, coal tar, and moisturizers. Oral or injected medications are also offered such as retinoids, methotrexate, cyclosporine, and biologics.

Only few pharmacies include giving basic advice on skin or dermatological problems in their pharmaceutical services. If you have experienced a skin problem, or are presently experiencing one, let us know. Lakeside Pharmacy will do our best to help you!
